What you're actually trying to block
Few people object to Instagram as a way to see friends' photos. The problems are Reels, a short-video feed that keeps going, and Explore, which learns quickly what holds your attention. For some people that's body-comparison content. For others it's suggestive "thirst trap" accounts that skirt the edge of the rules and wear down a porn-free streak. And for some it's the ex's profile they keep checking.
The hard truth for iPhone users is that you can't block Reels and keep the rest of Instagram. Reels, Stories, Explore and DMs are all served from the same Instagram domains, so any filter at the network level, NoorI included, sees one service. The honest choice is between Instagram's own soft controls and blocking the whole thing.
Option 1: Instagram's built-in controls
To cap your daily use:
- Open your profile, tap the menu, and go to Your activity → Time spent.
- Tap Set daily time limit. On iPhone, the shortest option has been 30 minutes since Instagram raised the minimum.
To reduce suggestive content in Explore and Reels:
- Go to Settings → Content preferences → Sensitive content.
- Choose Less.
You can also add an iPhone Screen Time App Limit for Instagram (Settings → Screen Time → App Limits) with Block at End of Limit turned on.
Why those controls don't last
- Instagram's own limit is a reminder you can dismiss, not a block.
- "Less" sensitive content makes the problem smaller but doesn't remove it. It also resets if you log into a second account.
- A Screen Time limit doesn't stop
instagram.comin Safari, and "Ignore Limit" is right there. - Deleting the app tends to last until the next notification email brings you back.
Option 2: Block Instagram completely with NoorI
- Enroll your iPhone with the free Cloudflare One app. See the iPhone setup guide.
- In Content Policy, create a rule, open the Apps tab and select Instagram. NoorI blocks
instagram.com,i.instagram.com(the app's API) andcdninstagram.com(where photos and videos are served). - Save, swipe Instagram closed, and reopen it. The feed won't refresh, and Reels won't play.
Blocking a named app is part of Pro ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial). The Free plan's Basic preset covers adult sites and security threats only.
Gotchas in the Meta family of apps
- Threads, Facebook and Messenger are separate catalog entries. Blocking Instagram doesn't block them. If you find yourself scrolling Facebook Reels instead, add Facebook to the same rule.
- Instagram DMs go with it. Before you turn the block on, move the conversations you care about to WhatsApp, iMessage or Signal.
- Instagram links shared in other apps open the NoorI block page instead of a preview.
- Content just moves. Much Reels content is reposted TikTok material, and the reverse is true too. If you're quitting short-form video, block TikTok and YouTube at the same time. See blocking TikTok on iPhone.
Make it stick: Guardian Mode
Guardian Mode (Pro) adds a second person to the loop. You invite someone you trust, such as a partner, friend, sponsor or accountability buddy, from Settings → Guardian Mode. Once they accept and you switch it on, these changes need their approval: editing or deleting a rule, pausing protection, unlocking your profile, and disconnecting NoorI. Adding a new block never needs approval, because it only makes you safer.
When you ask to unlock, your guardian gets an email. Even if they approve, nothing opens right away. There is a mandatory delay of at least 4 hours (24 hours by default), then a 30-minute window to make changes, then everything locks again by itself. A request your guardian never answers expires after 48 hours. A guardian also can't be removed for the first 2 days after they accept, so you can't invite a second email address you own and quietly delete it.
A middle ground many people use is a scheduled rule: Instagram blocked all day except a short evening window to catch up with friends, with Guardian Mode making sure the window stays short.
Blocking Instagram for a child?
Blocking this for a child instead? The same steps work, but a managed child profile with its own rules is a better fit than sharing your account. See setting different rules for different children.
Frequently asked questions
Can I block Instagram Reels but keep the rest of Instagram on iPhone?
Not reliably. Reels are served from the same Instagram domains as the feed, Stories and DMs, so network filters can't separate them. Instagram itself has no "turn off Reels" switch. Your choices are Instagram's own soft limits or blocking the app entirely.
Does blocking Instagram also block Threads?
No. Threads uses its own domains and is a separate entry in NoorI's app list. Add it to the same rule if you want both gone.
Will Instagram still work in Safari?
No. NoorI blocks instagram.com and its media servers for every app and browser on the phone, not just the Instagram app.
Will my account be affected?
No. Blocking access from your phone doesn't change your Instagram account. Nothing is deleted, and your followers see nothing different.
