Why people block Telegram
For many people Telegram is just a messaging app, and that's fine. But Telegram's public channels and bots are also one of the easiest places to find explicit content, leaked paid content, piracy, gambling tips and crypto pump-and-dump groups. All of it is searchable, and much of it sits outside the moderation that mainstream app stores require. If your Telegram has turned into a feed of channels you'd rather not be in, blocking it is a reasonable choice.
The honest limit: Telegram can get around DNS
Most apps look up a domain name every time they connect, and that lookup is where DNS filters like NoorI step in. Telegram is different. Its apps are built to keep working in countries that try to block them, so they ship with built-in server addresses and fallback connection methods. An installed, logged-in Telegram app may keep working even when Telegram's domains are blocked.
What a DNS block does reliably stop: t.me and telegram.me links, Telegram Web, and downloads and pages on telegram.org. For the app itself, you need the device-level steps below as well.
Step 1: Block Telegram's domains with NoorI
- Enroll your devices with the free Cloudflare One app (quick start).
- In Content Policy, create a rule and add Telegram from the Apps tab, which covers
telegram.org,t.meandtelegram.me. - Save. Shared Telegram links, Telegram Web and the download pages now show a block page on every enrolled phone and computer.
App blocking requires Pro ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial). Telegram's content filter also isn't something you can depend on. The "Disable filtering" option under Settings → Privacy and Security only appears for some accounts, so check it's switched off if you see it.
Step 2: Remove the app and make reinstalling hard
Because the app can work around DNS, this step matters more for Telegram than for other apps:
- Log out on every device under Settings → Devices → Terminate all other sessions, then delete the app. A logged-out app has to connect fresh, which makes it easier to stop.
- iPhone: under Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases, set Installing Apps to Don't Allow, and let someone else hold the passcode. You'll need them to install any app, which is a real trade-off.
- Android: there's no built-in way to block installing one app on your own account. Remove Telegram and any other copies (Telegram X, third-party clients), and rely on the NoorI block plus Guardian Mode for friction.
- Desktop: uninstall Telegram Desktop. Telegram Web is already blocked by Step 1.
Step 3: Add accountability with Guardian Mode
Guardian Mode (Pro) adds a second person to the loop. You invite someone you trust, such as a partner, friend, sponsor or accountability buddy, from Settings → Guardian Mode. Once they accept and you switch it on, these changes need their approval: editing or deleting a rule, pausing protection, unlocking your profile, and disconnecting NoorI. Adding a new block never needs approval, because it only makes you safer.
When you ask to unlock, your guardian gets an email. Even if they approve, nothing opens right away. There is a mandatory delay of at least 4 hours (24 hours by default), then a 30-minute window to make changes, then everything locks again by itself. A request your guardian never answers expires after 48 hours. A guardian also can't be removed for the first 2 days after they accept, so you can't invite a second email address you own and quietly delete it.
Watch the Activity tab too. Blocked lookups for Telegram's domains are a sign that Telegram is installed or that someone is opening Telegram links, which is useful to know when you're the one trying to quit.
Blocking Telegram for a child?
Blocking this for a child instead? The same steps work, but a managed child profile with its own rules is a better fit than sharing your account. See setting different rules for different children.
Frequently asked questions
Can a DNS filter fully block the Telegram app?
Not always. Telegram ships with built-in server addresses so it can work in countries that block it. A DNS filter reliably blocks Telegram links, Telegram Web and the downloads. The app itself also needs to be removed and its reinstallation restricted.
Does blocking t.me stop Telegram links in other apps?
Yes. t.me links shared in browsers, Discord, X or email open a block page instead of a channel.
Will blocking Telegram affect WhatsApp or Signal?
No. They are separate services with their own domains and separate entries in NoorI's app list.
