How to Block X (Twitter) on Android, or Limit It to a Time Window

Block X (Twitter) on your Android phone completely, or allow it only during a set window. Digital Wellbeing steps, why they slip, and a schedule that holds.

"But I need X for work"

Developers, journalists, founders and marketers often can't quit X (Twitter) completely. Announcements, support threads and their whole professional network are there. The trouble is that checking X for work never stays work for long. A ten-minute check for replies turns into an hour in the For You feed.

For most professionals, the answer is to give X a set place in the day instead of removing it altogether. This guide covers both: a full block, and a block with a scheduled window that you can't quietly stretch.

Option 1: Digital Wellbeing and Focus mode

  1. Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
  2. For a daily cap, tap Dashboard → X → App timer and choose a limit.
  3. For a time-based block, open Focus mode, select X (and any other distracting apps), then tap Set a schedule and choose your working hours.

On Samsung phones, the same options are under Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → App timers and Modes and Routines.

Where Digital Wellbeing slips

  • Focus mode has a Take a break button, and the timers can be deleted without any PIN.
  • It works on the app only. Open x.com in Chrome, or install it as a web app from Chrome's menu, and the timer doesn't apply.
  • There's no record of what happened. If you lift the limit at 23:00, nothing shows it the next morning.

Option 2: Block X with NoorI, with an optional schedule

  1. Enroll your phone with Cloudflare One using the Android setup guide, and set its battery usage to Unrestricted.
  2. In Content Policy, create a rule, open the Apps tab and choose X (Twitter). That covers x.com, twitter.com, twimg.com and t.co.
  3. To allow X at set times instead of blocking it outright, open the rule's schedule and set the times it should be active, for example blocked 00:00–12:30 and 13:00–23:59 on weekdays, which leaves a 30-minute lunch window.
  4. Save. The rule switches on and off on NoorI's side at the scheduled times, so nothing on the phone needs to be running.

App blocking and scheduling are both Pro features ($9.99/month, 7-day free trial). The Free plan's Basic preset doesn't include social networks.

The PWA and in-app browser gaps are closed

Because NoorI works on domains rather than app names, it doesn't matter whether you use the X app, an X shortcut installed from Chrome, Firefox, or a link opened inside Telegram or Discord. They all need to reach x.com and twimg.com, and they're all blocked. The only thing that reaches X is traffic that doesn't go through NoorI at all, such as a separate VPN app. The bypass prevention guide covers that case.

Make it stick: Always-on VPN and Guardian Mode

In Settings → Network & internet → VPN, tap the gear next to Cloudflare One and turn on Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. Then switching off the filter cuts your internet entirely instead of opening X back up.

Guardian Mode (Pro) adds a second person to the loop. You invite someone you trust, such as a partner, friend, sponsor or accountability buddy, from Settings → Guardian Mode. Once they accept and you switch it on, these changes need their approval: editing or deleting a rule, pausing protection, unlocking your profile, and disconnecting NoorI. Adding a new block never needs approval, because it only makes you safer.

When you ask to unlock, your guardian gets an email. Even if they approve, nothing opens right away. There is a mandatory delay of at least 4 hours (24 hours by default), then a 30-minute window to make changes, then everything locks again by itself. A request your guardian never answers expires after 48 hours. A guardian also can't be removed for the first 2 days after they accept, so you can't invite a second email address you own and quietly delete it.

Guardian Mode is especially useful for a scheduled rule. Without it, the lunch window has a way of growing to "just until this thread finishes".

Blocking X for a child?

Blocking this for a child instead? The same steps work, but a managed child profile with its own rules is a better fit than sharing your account. See setting different rules for different children.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep X DMs but block the feed?

No. DMs and the timeline use the same X domains, so a DNS filter can't separate them. If you need to stay reachable, share an email address or another messaging app for important contacts.

Does the schedule follow my time zone?

Yes. You set the times in your NoorI dashboard, and they apply on NoorI's side whether the phone is on Wi-Fi or mobile data.

What about TweetDeck or other X clients?

Any client that loads posts has to reach X's servers, so the same rule blocks it.
