Why people look past Qustodio

Qustodio is one of the biggest parental control apps around, and it's good at what it's built for: giving parents visibility and limits on a child's devices. People end up searching for an alternative for one of two reasons. Either they're an adult who wants to block porn or distractions on their own phone or laptop and find a parental control suite is aimed at someone else, or they're a parent who wants stricter blocking with less monitoring. NoorI is designed first for the adult case, and it covers the family case too.

What Qustodio offers

Based on Qustodio's site in October 2026, its features include:

  • Web filtering, plus app and game blocking
  • Daily time limits, scheduled breaks, routines and internet pausing
  • Location monitoring with arrival and departure alerts
  • Daily and weekly activity reports and browsing search alerts
  • On the higher tier: call and message monitoring, YouTube monitoring and custom rules
  • A panic button on Android

It runs on phones, tablets, computers and Chromebooks. There's a free account, and Premium comes in two annual tiers, Basic (up to 5 devices) and Complete (unlimited family devices), with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Prices vary by region and promotion, so check their site for current pricing.

How NoorI works

NoorI is a blocker, not a monitoring suite. It provisions a private Cloudflare Zero Trust Gateway location for your account (you don't need a Cloudflare account) and enrolls devices with the free Cloudflare One app on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. Every domain lookup from an enrolled device is checked against your rules before a connection is made, on any network. You can:

  • Block categories, apps or exact domains
  • Enforce safe search
  • Schedule rules (see scheduling internet access)
  • Pause the internet
  • Block specific URL paths in browsers with the optional NoorI certificate

For self-control, Guardian mode (Pro and Family) puts the off switch in someone else's hands. A trusted person must approve any change that loosens protection. Then a delay you chose (at least four hours) runs before a 30-minute editing window opens. Adding new blocks never needs approval.

For families, the Family plan adds up to 5 child accounts with their own rules and activity. See per-child rules.

Qustodio vs NoorI, side by side

Qustodio

  • Built for: parents monitoring and managing children's devices
  • Filtering: web filtering and app blocking through the Qustodio app on each device
  • Monitoring: activity reports, search alerts, location and (on the higher tier) calls, messages and YouTube
  • Time management: time limits, routines, breaks and pausing
  • Self-control for adults: not its focus
  • Platforms: phones, tablets, computers and Chromebooks

NoorI

  • Built for: adults blocking porn and distractions for themselves first, then families
  • Filtering: DNS-level, applied to every browser and app on enrolled devices, with URL paths in browsers via the certificate
  • Monitoring: an activity log of which domains were allowed or blocked, and nothing more
  • Time management: schedules per policy and Pause Internet
  • Self-control for adults: Guardian mode, with approval plus a mandatory delay before anything unlocks
  • Platforms: iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac
  • Pricing: free for 1 device. Pro is $9.99/month or $95.99/year. Family is $17.99/month or $172.99/year.

Monitoring vs blocking: a privacy question as much as a feature one

Monitoring suites are designed to show a parent what happens on a device, including searches, location and, on some tiers, messages. That's a reasonable choice for a young child. It's an odd fit for an adult's own phone, and many parents of older teens find it more than they want, too.

NoorI deliberately sees less. It knows which domains a device contacted and whether each request was allowed or blocked. It never sees page content, search terms or messages, because none of that is in a DNS lookup. If what you want is "this content doesn't load here," that's enough. For the details, read how DNS filtering works.

When Qustodio is the better choice

  • You're a parent who wants visibility, such as daily reports, search alerts or YouTube monitoring, not just blocking.
  • You need location tracking or arrival and departure alerts. NoorI doesn't track location.
  • You want call and message monitoring for a child's phone.
  • You use Chromebooks or need very broad device coverage for a large family.
  • You want per-app daily time limits rather than scheduled blocking windows.

When NoorI is the better choice

  • You're an adult protecting yourself. Guardian mode was built for porn-addiction recovery and self-control, and nothing about it assumes you're a child.
  • You want blocking without surveillance. There's no location tracking and no message reading, just allow or block at the domain level.
  • You want filtering below the app layer, so it applies in every browser, every app and private windows alike, and manual DNS changes are blocked on enrolled devices. See our bypass-proofing guide.
  • You're technical and like that it runs on Cloudflare's Zero Trust Gateway, with rules you can reason about.
  • You want a simple family setup with up to 5 child accounts, each with their own rules, on the same plan as your own devices.

Frequently asked questions

Can adults use Qustodio on their own phone?

Qustodio is designed around parents managing children's devices, so it isn't built for self-control. Adults blocking porn or distractions for themselves usually do better with a tool that has a self-lock, such as NoorI's Guardian mode, where a trusted person must approve any unlock.

Is there a Qustodio alternative that doesn't monitor messages?

Yes. NoorI filters at the DNS level and can only see which domains a device contacted and whether they were allowed or blocked. It never sees messages, search terms or page content, and it doesn't track location.

Is there a free alternative to Qustodio?

NoorI's free plan covers one device with the Basic preset and doesn't need a card. Multiple child accounts need the Family plan, which costs $17.99 a month or $172.99 a year.

Does NoorI have screen time limits like Qustodio?

NoorI uses schedules rather than daily time allowances. You can block categories, apps or the whole internet during set hours, and pause the internet on demand, but it doesn't count minutes of use per app.

Which is harder to bypass, Qustodio or NoorI?

They work at different layers. NoorI filters DNS through an always-on tunnel and blocks manual DNS changes, so private windows and other browsers don't get around it. Any tool can be defeated by removing it from a device you fully control, so pair either one with OS-level restrictions.
